Nail Fungus
While nail fungus may start as a cosmetic issue, fungal nails can become thick, brittle, painful, and difficult to manage — sometimes even leading to secondary infections. At Summit Foot + Ankle, we provide effective diagnosis and treatment options to restore nail health and prevent recurrence.
You may have NAIL FUNGUS
What is Nail Fungus?
Nail fungus (onychomycosis) is a fungal infection that affects toenails (and sometimes fingernails). The infection begins as a small white or yellow spot under the nail and can spread deeper into the nail bed, causing discoloration, thickening, and crumbling edges.

What Causes Nail Fungus?
Fungal nail infections develop when certain fungi — like dermatophytes, yeasts, or molds — invade the nail. Common risk factors include:
- Moist Environments: Sweaty shoes, damp socks, locker rooms, and public showers
- Footwear: Tight shoes that trap moisture
- Injuries: Cracks in the nail or surrounding skin
- Weakened Immune System: More common in those with chronic conditions
- Age: Older adults are more prone due to slower nail growth and circulation changes
- Diabetes or Circulation Issues: Increased susceptibility and risk of complications
Symptoms
Nail fungus can progress slowly but eventually cause noticeable changes, including:
- Yellow, white, or brown discoloration
- Thickened, brittle, or crumbly nails
- Nails that lift from the nail bed
- Foul odor from the nail
- Pain or discomfort when walking or wearing shoes

- Keep Feet Clean & Dry: Wash daily and dry thoroughly, especially between the toes
- Change Socks Daily: Choose moisture-wicking socks if you sweat heavily
- Disinfect Shoes: Use antifungal sprays or UV shoe sanitizers
- Trim Nails Straight Across: Avoid cutting nails too short or injuring the nail bed
- Wear Breathable Shoes: Rotate shoes to allow them to dry completely
- Avoid Going Barefoot in Public Areas: Wear sandals in locker rooms, showers, or pools
